Cold weather brings dangerous road conditions. Driving on wet or icy roads is sometimes unavoidable, but there are certain things you can do to make the experience safer. Here are some tips for driving on wet or icy roads.

Slow Down

If it’s raining, snowing or the roads are wet and icy, slow down. There is no reason to risk your life or others on the road by going fast, so reduce your speed. When you’re driving at a slower speed, it’s easier to spot ice patches or potholes on the road, and you’ll have more reaction time to safely avoid them.

Give the Other Cars Space

When the weather is bad, don’t follow other drivers closely. A good rule of thumb is to double the amount of space you would usually give the driver in front of you when the roads are wet or icy. This will allow a safe distance in case the driver in front of you needs to decrease their speed or stop suddenly.

Avoid Slamming on Your Brakes

When the road is icy or wet, slamming on your brakes can cause you to skid or slide. If you can do it safely, slowly press down on your brake pedal when you need to decrease speed or stop. The same goes for the gas pedal. You should always increase your speed slowly to avoid sliding.

Check Your Brakes

It’s smart to have your brakes checked by a mechanic while the weather is still warm and pleasant. When the winter hits, you’ll be prepared with brakes that can handle icy conditions.

Be Prepared

Having emergency equipment in your car can make dangerous driving conditions a little easier if something unexpected happens. A basic winter emergency kit should include a flashlight, batteries, a blanket, gloves, first aid kit and bottled water.

Use these tips when driving on wet or icy roads to avoid accidents and keep yourself and other drivers safe.
